insert clever quip about ubiquity here
recently, i purchased a laptop for myself, and for another human being – somewhere in the world.
laptop.org has a goal of providing one laptop for every child in the world.
i’m not sure i’m sold on the idea that a laptop will solve every problem a child has, but i am big on the idea that education will change lives. i also like the idea that these devices allow kids to express themselves and experience entertainment.
the design of the devices seems quite well thought out, and the creators seem to have considered the problems of the regions where kids will use these laptops. any time one of these laptops turns on – it collects wireless signal from anywhere it can, and as soon as it does, broadcasts the signal to other laptops like it. so the more of these laptops there are – the wider the network.
the laptop has round corners, contains no hazardous materials, and comes with a crank, a pull cord and a pedal to charge the laptop.
there is no spinning hard drive, so drops and scuffs won’t hurt it. it is about the same size as a textbook, and weighs less than a lunchbox.
the software is all free and open source. it has a word processor, a journal, a music creation program, a browser, chat and a shell and debugger if you want to reprogram it.
