lance makes it seven · Jul 25, 08:40 am

Lance makes it seven

lance made it look easy. the easy part comes from the intensive training and planning of lance and johann (the team manager).

i was very impressed with jan ulrich this year, surviving two crashes (one cartwheel down a mountainside and one through the back of his team car windshield if rumours are true) and still coming in at 3rd overall. while lance and jan battle it out on the climbs they seem to be good friends off the bike.

joseba beloki came in 75th this year which was a big disappointment for me, as i’d hoped he’d recovered more from his bone breaking crash two years ago, but i was still very impressed with his performance, tenancity and ability to show himself on some mountain stages.

anyone wonder where poor old tyler hamilton was this year?

now i guess i have to get back to normal life, and stop spending 2 hours of every day watching the tour.

oh, and if you don’t know who lance is – here’s a couple of sports illustrated covers for you (with one more on the way):

what is 10 | 2? · Jul 12, 08:47 am

if you’re like me you’ve been watching a lot of the tour lately. you may have seen the odd reference to 10 | 2 lying around on nike jerseys and other things. you may ask yourself what that’s all about. you can go to the nike wear yellow site and check it out. at the bottom there’s a video that shows the press release where lance announced that he had testicular cancer that spread to his abdomen, lungs and brain.

strangely, through his year long recovery the one person who stood by him (along side family and friends) was his nike rep. as a professional athlete you get a lot of contact with your nike rep, but i imagine that it’s quite strange for a clothing rep to stand by someone dying of cancer. not exactly a good marketing move for nike. but i guess that was never what it was about. it must have been very encouraging and heartening to have a sponsor stand by you through such a dark time.

now that lance is back on top nike is still doing interesting things, like creating a time trial wheel with strange little custom icons:

things like his kid’s initials, the state of texas, the eiffel tower and a 6 with horns and a tail – good luck beating that record.

so maybe nike is an eveil corporation that exploits kids, but they’re not doing it all wrong.
